New Perspectives and Challenges in Japanese Diaspora Studies:

This article examines the achievements and challenges of Japanese diaspora research over the past two decades. After confirming that large-scale return migration characterizes the Japanese diaspora, I will introduce the emergence of studies that capture such migration from racial and gender perspectives, as well as studies that examine political representations of the diaspora. Finally, as a challenge for Japanese diaspora studies, I will point out that it has not adequately countered current exclusionism due to its weak historical perspective.
